The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Minnesota announced 12 Honor Award winners at their 76th Annual Convention and Exhibition in November. Alchemy Architects received two out of the twelve awards. Their Blair Barn House located in Blair, Wisconsin combines the utilitarian simplicity of a traditional barn with modernistic beauty, which blends well with the neighboring farm life.
Characteristics customary to 19th century barns work as the foundation in the Blair Barn House, which uses new technologies like geothermal heating, to attain sustainability status within its rural surroundings. Strategically placed Andersen windows optimize views, light and ventilation as well as the structure’s energy efficiency.
Because quality and durability are key aspects of sustainability, Alchemy’s Founder, Geoffrey Warner, chooses Andersen windows for his homes.
Warner’s designs have a history of reducing waste as well as a home’s environmental footprint as evident in his weeHouse module homes. Elegantly simple, site-specific and even “off-the-grid” designs incorporate state-of-the-art sustainable building practices.
